ABOUT me

When I was younger, I dreamed of becoming a doctor, a lawyer, the president; I knew I would be in school for a long time. I never imagined I would one day grow up to say “Mom, I don’t want to go to college,” and mean it.

I graduated from Worthington Kilbourne High School in May 2017, having attended Worthington Schools since kindergarten. Although I have tried nearly every sport, my lack of athleticism and coordination steered

me towards the performing arts. I spent several winters in the theater, countless hours in the choir room, and even a month with the marching band. When I wasn’t hiding out in the music department I made my home at the back table in the library. For four years I camped out here during lunch and occasionally got in a few bites of food between all the textbook reading and paper writing.

When I decided to take a gap year, I had no idea how I was going to spend my time. I only knew for a variety of reasons I wasn’t ready to start college. I ended up on a journey of self-discovery, self-discipline, and self-awareness: a journey I know will never truly end. This year I am taking the time to try new things and deliberately go out of my comfort zone in the hopes of learning more about myself and all the world has to offer.

I told my mom “I don’t want to go to college,” but I left out a key word: yet. With as big of a financial investment as college is, I want to be fully invested personally in the learning. I want to be passionate about and interested in my future studies to ensure I make the most of my education. I plan to attend college beginning in the fall of 2018 and look forward to seeing where my studies take me.

This year has been full of the unexpected. I know I will look back on this time fondly, and someday share my stories from The Gap Year.
